Quick answer

For a first trip, book near the Duomo or in Brera. The top luxury picks are the Two-Key hotels around Via Manzoni and Via della Spiga: Mandarin Oriental, Bvlgari, Four Seasons, Grand Hotel et de Milan and the new Carlton. Hotel Spadari is a central four-star, and Ostello Bello Duomo is the budget choice.

Star ratings, openings and closures below were checked on 5 October 2026, on the hotels’ own websites where possible and in the MICHELIN Guide. A star rating is only given where the hotel states it. Room rates in Milan swing a lot with trade fairs and fashion weeks, so this guide gives a price level (€ to €€€€) instead of nightly prices. Check current rates on the booking page before you decide.

Luxury hotels in Milan: the MICHELIN Key list

The MICHELIN Guide now rates hotels with Keys, the way it rates restaurants with stars. No Milan hotel holds Three Keys. In the 2026 selection, six hold Two:

  • Bvlgari Hotel MilanoMap, opened in 2004 as the first Bulgari hotel, with a private garden of about 4,000 m² off Via Fratelli Gabba.
  • Four Seasons Hotel MilanoMap, in a 15th-century convent on Via Gesù. It has 118 rooms and suites, and they were renovated in 2025.
  • Grand Hotel et de MilanMap, a five-star on Via Manzoni where Giuseppe Verdi lived for 27 years.
  • Mandarin Oriental MilanMap, a few steps from La Scala, home to the Michelin-starred restaurant Seta.

  • The Carlton MilanMap, Rocco Forte’s five-star on Via Senato, opened on 6 November 2025 with a spa and a restaurant by chef Fulvio Pierangelini.

All six are in or next to the fashion district, the grid of streets around Via Montenapoleone just north of the Duomo, so you can walk to the main sights from any of them.

The One-Key hotels in 2026 are Palazzo Parigi Hotel & Grand SpaMap, Casa Brera, a Luxury Collection HotelMap, Casa Cipriani MilanoMap, Vico MilanoMap and the Hotel Principe di SavoiaMap. The Principe di Savoia closes on 1 January 2027 for a restoration and is due to reopen in 2029, so do not book it for 2027 dates.

Best hotels near the Duomo (city center)

Staying by the cathedral means you can walk to the Galleria, La Scala and the Duomo rooftop, which matters most on a short trip. It is also the most expensive part of the city. Our Duomo tickets guide covers what to book for the cathedral itself.

The area is busy and pickpocketing is more common around the station, so keep to the main streets late at night. Our Milano Centrale guide explains the station itself.

Before you book

Milan charges a tourist tax per person per night, paid at the hotel. In 2026 it is €10 in four and five-star hotels, €7.40 in three-star hotels and €3 in hostels, for up to 14 nights. The city has said the rates may go back down in 2027.

Prices go up sharply during Design Week and the Salone del Mobile (13 to 18 April 2027) and Women’s Fashion Week (23 February to 1 March 2027). For those dates, book as early as you can. If you are still choosing a neighbourhood, our guide to where to stay in Milan compares the areas, their metro lines and their price levels.
