Quick answer

The best time to visit Milan is April to June or September to October, when average highs run from 66°F to 83°F. May is the safest single month. Avoid Design Week (13 to 18 April 2027) and fashion weeks unless you are going for them, because hotel prices can more than triple, and expect closed restaurants around 15 August.

The weather figures below are the official 1991-2020 climate normals for Milano Linate, published by the World Meteorological Organization. Event dates and hotel prices were checked on 5 October 2026.

The fashion week dates come from the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the body that runs the shows. Formula 1 races at the Monza circuitMap, just north of Milan.

When Milan hotels cost the most

Design Week is the peak. In April 2026, across more than 200 Milan hotels, the average double room cost €598 a night during Design Week, against €173 in ordinary weeks (Maiora Solutions data). A four-star room went from €180 to €638.

For context, Milan’s average room rate from April to June 2026 was €228.94 a night, one of the highest in Italy (Trademark Italia hotel monitor). The fashion weeks and trade fairs at Rho also push prices up, so check your dates against the table above before you book anything non-refundable.

Spring in Milan (March to May)

Spring is mild. March highs average 60°F, and by May they reach 75°F. April and May are wetter, with 8 or 9 rainy days a month, so pack a light umbrella.

  • April is warm enough for the rooftop of the DuomoMap (see our Duomo tickets guide), but Design Week (13 to 18 April 2027) makes it the most expensive week of the year. Come before or after it.
  • Easter 2027 falls on 28 March, and Easter Monday is a public holiday in Italy.
  • May is the best all-round month, with highs of 75°F and only two days on average at 86°F or more.

Spring weekends are among the busiest dates for the Last SupperMap, and peak slots can sell out soon after each release. Our Last Supper tickets guide explains when new dates go on sale.

Summer in Milan (June to August)

Summer is hot. July averages 20 days at 86°F or more, and nights stay around 67°F, so a hotel with air conditioning matters. June is the most comfortable summer month, with highs of 83°F.

August is quiet. Many Milan restaurants, including well-known ones, close for two or three weeks around Ferragosto on 15 August, and small neighborhood shops often shut for the whole week. Most museums stay open on 15 August with holiday hours. Brera, the Navigli, Isola and Porta Nuova keep the most bars and restaurants running, so plan your evenings around them; our guide to the Navigli covers the canal district.

In the hottest weeks, plan indoor sights for the afternoon and save the outdoors for the early evening, when aperitivo starts. On warm evenings I like Parco SempioneMap, where people gather on the grass to play bongos and sing. In early summer, CasciNetMap, a farmhouse on the east side of the city (M4 Repetti), runs Friday dinners with music, films and workshops; it takes a break from mid-July to mid-September, so check its events page first. A day on Lake Como is a good break from the city heat; go on a weekday, because summer weekends and August bring the biggest crowds on the ferries.

Autumn in Milan (September to November)

September is summer’s easier end, with highs of 78°F and only 5 rainy days. The last week of September is Women’s Fashion Week (21 to 27 September 2027), so book early or come in the first half of the month.

Milan in October brings highs of 66°F and more rain, about 3.2 inches over 7 days. Since 2026, 4 October (St Francis of Assisi) is a national holiday in Italy. It is a good month for museums and day trips, and the art season is back after the summer: galleries open new shows almost every week. Search “vernissage Milano” or check the openings listed on Zero and Itinerari nell’arte. Openings are free, and in my experience someone often pours you a glass of wine. The lake season, meanwhile, is winding down: the Villa Melzi gardensMap in Bellagio close for the year on 1 November, and many Bellagio hotels close from late October or early November until around April.

November is the wettest month, with about 4.1 inches of rain over 8 days, and highs fall to 54°F. The EICMA motorcycle show runs at Rho from 5 to 8 November 2026.

Winter in Milan (December to February)

Winter is cold and fairly dry. Highs average 45°F in December and January, and about 16 nights in an average January drop below freezing. Bring a warm coat, gloves and shoes that can handle wet pavements.

Teatro alla Scala, which opens its 2026/2027 opera season on 7 December.

Milan in December is the most festive month. On 7 December the city celebrates its patron saint, Sant’Ambrogio, and the Oh Bej Oh Bej fair fills the streets around Sforza CastleMap; in 2025 it ran from 5 to 8 December, and the 2026 dates should be checked closer to the time. The same night Teatro alla ScalaMap opens its season, in 2026 with Verdi’s Otello conducted by Myung-Whun Chung, with further performances until 5 January 2027. 8 December is a national holiday too. The Christmas market in Piazza del Duomo opened on 2 December in 2025.

Holiday closures matter at Christmas: the Last Supper museum closes on 25 December and 1 January, and 25 and 26 December, 1 January and 6 January are national holidays.

Milan in January and February has two fashion weeks, for men from 15 to 19 January 2027 and for women from 23 February to 1 March 2027. The weeks in between have no fashion week, which makes them a good window for museums. January and February are the driest months, at about 1.5 inches of rain each. February highs climb back to 50°F.
