Quick answer
Buy on the official shop, ticket.duomomilano.it, where online tickets carry no fees. The cathedral and museum cost €10, and the cathedral plus rooftop costs €22 by stairs or €26 by lift. If you only want one ticket and can manage 251 steps, Duomo and Terraces by stairs is the best value.
All prices, hours and rules below were checked on the official Duomo ticket shop and website on 5 October 2026. Prices change, so the shop has the final word at checkout.
Milan Duomo ticket prices
The Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo, which runs the cathedral, sells three families of tickets: the inside of the cathedral (with or without the museum), the rooftop terraces on their own, and combined tickets. Prices are full / reduced.

Older blog posts describe passes called “Duomo Pass Lift” and “Duomo Pass Stairs” that included the museum. Those names now point to Duomo and Terraces, and the current product pages list the cathedral and rooftop only. If you want the museum too, look at the Fast-Track Pass or the Ambrosiana combo.
The shop also sells a 60-minute guided Duomo Highlights Tour in English or Italian. The way its price is split at checkout was unclear when we checked, so look at the total before you pay.
Who gets in free or at a reduced rate
Children up to age 5 and people with a disability above 74% enter free. The official pages checked do not state the age band for reduced tickets, and travel sites disagree, so check your eligibility on the shop before choosing a reduced ticket.
Which Duomo ticket should you buy
- First visit, you want the rooftop, you are fine with stairs: Duomo and Terraces by stairs, €22.
- First visit, you would rather not climb up: Duomo and Terraces by lift, €26. You still walk down, and you take stairs between the two terrace levels.
- Visiting in summer or on a weekend and hate queues: Fast-Track Pass, €32. It adds the museum, archaeological area and crypt, so it is good value if you would visit those anyway.
- On a budget, no rooftop: Duomo + Museum, €10. On a Wednesday, when the museum is closed, the Duomo-only ticket is €8.
- You want the full complex at an easy pace: Culture Pass, €15, then add a rooftop-only ticket if you change your mind.
- Art lovers with a full day: Combo Stairs + Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, €36. The official guide is at least 3 hours.
- Families with small children: under-6s are free, but prams are not allowed on the terraces.
- Limited mobility: the lift only reaches the first terrace level, and the upper level is reached by two steep stairways. Visitors with a certified disability and their companion get priority access with standard tickets.
Duomo rooftop: lift or stairs
The stairs have 251 steps. The lift costs €4 more than the stairs on the combined ticket and €2 more on the rooftop-only ticket.
In both cases you arrive at the first terrace level, about 31 metres up. The central terrace, about 45 metres up and roughly the size of the main nave, is reached on foot by two steep stairways. Everyone goes back down by stairs. The lift saves you the climb to the first level, but you still need to be comfortable on stairs.
Up there you walk among 135 spires and many of the cathedral’s 3,400-plus marble statues, with the gilded Madonnina on the main spire above you. On clear days you can see the Alps. Travel guides note the terraces can be restricted or closed in rain, ice or strong wind.
How to buy Duomo tickets
The official shop is ticket.duomomilano.it. It opens behind a short “Checking your browser” waiting screen that clears in a few seconds.
- Online: timed tickets, no service or presale fees since 1 April 2025. Groups pay a presale fee (€7 up to 10 people, €20 for larger groups).
- Ticket offices: open 9am to 6pm daily.
- Resellers: the official site keeps a list of authorized resellers and asks buyers to check it.
You cannot book a cathedral visit for times when a service is being held inside. Each ticket gives one entry to each area it covers.
Free entry for prayer and Mass
Entering to pray, attend Mass or receive the sacraments is free and uses separate entrances: the side doors from 7am to 8:30am and the main north door from 8am to 7pm. You cannot sightsee on this entry.
Free days
The “Milano al Duomo” initiative opens the cathedral and the Duomo Museum for free on set dates, with booking on duomomilano.it and a maximum of 2 places per booking:
- 16 October 2026, 9am to 6pm
- 4 November 2026, 9am to 4pm
- 2 February 2027, 9am to 4pm
- 18 March 2027, 9am to 6pm
The Duomo Museum is also free on the last Sunday of each month, 10am to 7pm.
Skip-the-line tickets and guided tours
The official Fast-Track tickets above skip the rooftop line with a dedicated lift. Look at resellers when the official slots you want are gone, or when you want a guide to walk you through the cathedral. Check that the listing says which areas are included (rooftop, museum) and whether you go up by lift or stairs.
Duomo opening hours

In summer 2026 the terraces stayed open until 8pm from Friday to Sunday (5 June to 13 September, last entry 7pm). Check whether the late opening returns before planning a sunset visit in 2027.
The Duomo Museum is inside Palazzo Reale, at Piazza del Duomo 12. The nearest metro stop is Duomo, on the red M1 and yellow M3 lines.
Duomo dress code and what you can bring
Every cathedral and terrace ticket lists the same rule: cover your shoulders and legs. Travel guides report that people in shorts, tank tops or miniskirts get turned away, so in summer carry a scarf or light layer. Hats come off inside.
Not allowed in:
- luggage and large bags
- food and drink, glass, knives
- helmets, tripods, drones and lasers
- animals other than guide dogs
- high heels and prams on the terraces
- signs or symbols linked to political movements
For luggage, the ticket shop points visitors to Radical Storage points nearby.
Security check and queues
Everyone goes through a security check: you empty your pockets of metal objects and open your bags. Arrive a little before your time slot.
The cathedral does not publish wait times. One travel guide reports under 15 minutes early in the morning and 20 to 40 minutes at busy times. If you are visiting on a summer weekend, the Fast-Track tickets are the official way to cut the rooftop wait.
Best time to visit the Duomo
Travel guides suggest going before 10am or after 4pm. At midday in summer the terraces have no shade. Wednesday is cheaper for the cathedral alone, but the museum is closed that day.
How long to spend at the Duomo
The official minimum durations are:
- Duomo + Museum: 60 minutes or more
- Terraces only: 60 minutes or more
- Cathedral and terraces: 120 minutes or more
- Culture Pass: 120 minutes or more
- Combo with the Ambrosiana: 180 minutes or more
One travel guide suggests 2.5 to 3 hours for the full complex.
Combining the Duomo with the Last Supper
The Last Supper is a short ride from Duomo on the red M1 line, at Conciliazione. Its tickets sell out weeks ahead and are released in batches, so book that first and build your Duomo visit around it. Our guide to Last Supper tickets explains when new dates go on sale.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free to enter the Milan Duomo?
Visiting as a tourist requires a ticket. The cheapest are Duomo + Museum at €10, or the Duomo-only ticket at €8, sold on Wednesdays and on the last Sunday of the month. Entering for prayer or Mass is free through separate entrances, but it does not include a sightseeing visit.
Should I take the stairs or the lift to the Duomo rooftop?
The stairs (251 steps) cost €22 with the cathedral, the lift €26. The lift only reaches the first terrace level, so you still climb stairs to the top level and walk down either way.
What is the dress code for the Milan Duomo?
Shoulders and legs must be covered, for both the cathedral and the terraces. Travel guides report that visitors in shorts, tank tops or miniskirts are refused entry.
How long do you need at the Duomo?
The official guide is at least 60 minutes for the cathedral and museum and at least 120 minutes if you add the rooftop. Plan on half a day if you want the full complex.
Do I need to book Duomo tickets in advance?
It is the safest option. Online tickets are timed and have had no booking fees since April 2025. If you want to avoid the rooftop queue, the Fast-Track tickets (€28 or €32) use a dedicated lift.
Are there free days at the Duomo?
Yes, with booking on duomomilano.it, up to 2 places per booking. Upcoming dates are 16 October 2026, 4 November 2026, 2 February 2027 and 18 March 2027, for the cathedral and the Duomo Museum only.
