Is it safe to stay near Milano Centrale?

For most visitors who take normal care, yes. The station is busy from the first train to the last and heavily policed. The area around Centrale, Garibaldi and Rogoredo stations is a “zona rossa”, a reinforced surveillance zone, until 30 March 2027. Police there can remove people with criminal records who behave dangerously. That label tells you the area gets extra police attention; no published data shows whether the zones have reduced crime.

What to expect:

  • Pickpockets. Theft is more common around the station than in most parts of the city. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you in the station and on the metro.
  • Fake helpers. At the ticket machines, people sometimes offer to help, then ask for money or take your change. Use the staffed ticket office if you get stuck.
  • Quiet streets at night. The office blocks around the station empty out in the evening. Stay on the main lit streets, such as Piazza Duca d’Aosta and Via Vittor Pisani, or take a white licensed taxi from the rank.
  • Taxis. Some drivers overcharge tourists, so I book mine through an app: Freenow by Lyft, the old mytaxi, works in Milan. Our taxis in Milan guide explains the fares and which apps work.

Our guide to whether Milan is safe covers the rest of the city.

Before you book

  • Tourist tax. Milan charges it per person per night, paid at the hotel. In 2026 it is €10 in four and five-star hotels, €7.40 in three-star hotels and €3 in hostels. Under-18s are exempt, and the rates may change in 2027.
  • Trade fair dates. Prices near the station jump during big events: the EICMA motorcycle show (5 to 8 November 2026), Women’s Fashion Week (23 February to 1 March 2027) and the Salone del Mobile (13 to 18 April 2027).
  • Principe di Savoia. The luxury hotel on Piazza della Repubblica, one metro stop from Centrale, closes on 1 January 2027 for restoration and plans to reopen in 2029. Do not plan a 2027 stay there.
  • Arriving before check-in. If your room is not ready, the official KiPoint left-luggage office in the station is open 7am to 9pm and costs from €6 per bag.
