Quick answer
Start with aperitivo around 6pm to 9pm, then walk from the lit-up Duomo through the Galleria, which never closes, to La Scala. On Thursdays, Palazzo Reale and three other museums stay open until 10:30pm. Finish on the Navigli or a rooftop bar, and take a night bus home after the metro stops around 12:30am.
Opening hours, prices and transport details below were checked on official sites on 5 October 2026. For clubs and cocktail bars, see our Milan nightlife guide.
See the Duomo and the Galleria lit up
The DuomoMap is lit after dark, and Piazza del Duomo stays busy well into the evening.

The triumphal arch entrance of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, lit up at night.
The cathedral terraces close at 7pm, with last entry at 6pm, so if you want the rooftop, go up before dinner. The summer late opening (until 8pm on Fridays to Sundays) ended on 13 September 2026; our Duomo tickets guide has the prices.
The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele IIMap next door is a public passage with no doors, open 24 hours and free. Shops close in the evening, but you can still walk through, look up at the glass dome and spin your heel on the bull mosaic for luck. At the Duomo end, Camparino in GalleriaMap has served Campari since 1915; its stand-up bar is open until 11pm Monday to Saturday and 9pm on Sunday.
In the square, ignore people who tie a “free” bracelet on your wrist or offer to take photos. Both end with a demand for money.
Aperitivo, the start of a Milan evening
Aperitivo runs from roughly 6pm to 9pm. You pay for a drink and food comes with it, from a few snacks to a buffet. Expect about €10 to €20 in neighborhoods such as the Navigli and Porta Venezia, and €20 to €30 on rooftops and in hotel bars.

A spritz with snacks on an outdoor café table, the usual aperitivo order.
If the waiter brings chips and olives with your drink, they are included in the price. It is how aperitivo works, not a trick to charge you more, so there is no need to send them back.
For a more local start, I like Cantine IsolaMap, a wine shop and bar at Via Paolo Sarpi 30 in Chinatown, where people order a glass and drink it out on the street. It is open every day from 10am to 10pm.
Dinner comes after aperitivo. Our aperitivo guide lists bars by area and explains the buffet etiquette.
Rooftop bars with a view
| Bar | Where | Evening hours | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Terrazza Aperol | Piazza del Duomo, corner of the Galleria | Check on arrival | No reservations, often a line; spritz €21 |
| Rinascente, 7th floor | Department store by the Duomo | Breakfast to dinner | Side lifts run to the floor after the store closes |
| The Roof | Piazza Missori, 10th floor | Until 1am, 2am Fri-Sat | Aperitivo 6pm to 8:30pm, booking recommended |
| Terrazza Gallia | Opposite Milano Centrale, 7th floor | Until 12:30am | Hotel rooftop bar, open daily |
Terrazza AperolMap looks straight at the cathedral facade. On the seventh floor of La RinascenteMap, Il BarMap and two restaurants share one terrace next to the Duomo. The RoofMap, on top of the Hotel dei Cavalieri, takes walk-ins after dinner, and Terrazza GalliaMap suits a last drink if you are staying near the station.
Museums open late on Thursdays
On Thursday evenings four museums stay open until 10:30pm, with last entry an hour before closing.
| Museum | Thursday hours | Ticket |
|---|---|---|
| Palazzo Reale (exhibitions) | 10am to 10:30pm | Usually €15; some shows free |
| Museo del Novecento | 10am to 10:30pm | €10, free under 18 |
| Mudec | 9:30am to 10:30pm | Permanent collection free; exhibitions extra |
| PAC | 10am to 10:30pm | Depends on the show |
Palazzo RealeMap and the Museo del NovecentoMap both stand on Piazza del Duomo, so you can see an exhibition and come out to the cathedral lit up. MudecMap is in the Tortona area near the Navigli, and PACMap is on Via Palestro. Our guide to Milan museums has the full hours and free days.
Opera, ballet and jazz
An evening at Teatro alla ScalaMap is the classic Milan night out. In autumn 2026 the programme includes La traviata until 15 October, Giselle until 23 October, Faust from 20 October to 8 November and Verdi’s Requiem from 28 to 30 October. The new season opens on 7 December with Otello. The cheapest seats on the seat maps cost €10, and the box office opens two hours before each evening performance for that night’s tickets.

Arrive at least 20 minutes before curtain-up; latecomers in the stalls wait for the interval. Shorts and sleeveless T-shirts are not allowed in the auditorium. Our La Scala guide explains how to buy tickets, and if nothing is left you can still take a La Scala museum and theatre tour by day.
For jazz, Blue Note MilanoMap in Isola (M5 Isola) usually has two sets a night, at 8:30pm and 11pm, and prices differ online and at the door. MoebiusMap, near Centrale, has live jazz, bossa nova, swing and soul on Monday and Thursday evenings.
Listening bars
A listening bar is a bar where vinyl records play on a carefully built hi-fi system and the music is the reason to go, at a volume that still lets you talk. The idea comes from the jazz kissa of Japan, and Milan has a dozen of them. Good first picks are MOGOMap in Isola, open from 7pm Tuesday to Saturday, GestoMap in Porta Venezia, with vinyl DJ sets and jam sessions in its Malinconia room, and FuturaMap by the Darsena, open every day from 5pm. Addresses and hours for all of them are in our Milan nightlife guide.
Gallery openings
In the evening, Milan’s galleries open new shows with a vernissage, and anyone can walk in. Search Google for “vernissage Milano oggi” and pick one: entry is free and they often pour you a glass of wine, which makes it one of my favorite ways to start an evening. The Artribune openings calendar and itinerarinellarte.it list upcoming openings with times and addresses.
A night show at the Planetarium
The Civic PlanetariumMap on Corso Venezia holds evening talks under its 19.6-meter dome, usually at 9pm on several weeknights (in October 2026, for example, on 6, 8, 9, 13 and 15 October). Tickets cost €5, or €3 reduced. Shows are in Italian, with free AI translation into English: ask the staff before it starts, because nobody is let in once the show begins.
Walking in Milan at night
A short evening walk links the main sights. From Piazza del Duomo, walk through the Galleria to Piazza della Scala (about 0.5 km, 7 minutes), then continue north into Brera for dinner or a drink.

Bars and restaurants lit up along both banks of the Naviglio Grande at night.
The other classic is the Navigli. Take the M2 to Porta Genova, walk along the Naviglio Grande and end at the Darsena, the old dock.
The last boats from the NavigaMI pierMap leave at 7:40pm, and the 2026 timetable runs until 1 November. NavigaMI sells an aperitivo cruise from €33 with one drink and snacks, and GetYourGuide lists other Navigli cruises. Our Navigli guide covers the area in detail.
Until 2 November 2026, a city ordinance applies in 12 nightlife areas, including the Navigli, Brera, Isola, Arco della Pace and Gae Aulenti. Shops stop selling alcohol at 10pm, takeaway drinks stop at midnight, and outdoor tables close at 1am (2am on Friday and Saturday nights).
Is Milan safe at night?
The center is busy in the evening and heavily patrolled. Until 30 March 2027, the station areas (Centrale, Garibaldi with Corso Como and Gae Aulenti), Piazza del Duomo, the Navigli and Darsena and the Colonne di San Lorenzo are “red zones” with reinforced police controls. The main risk for visitors is pickpocketing in crowds, on the metro and at the stations. Keep your phone out of back pockets, and watch your drink in bars. Our guide to whether Milan is safe covers scams and areas in more detail.
